The Thatharana Trek is a short and scenic adventure that takes you to a beautiful ridge in the Dhauladhar mountain range, just above Dharamshala. Ideal for beginners and weekend trekkers, the trail offers panoramic views of the snow-covered peaks, lush pine forests, and stunning sunsets over the Kangra Valley. Less crowded than Triund, Thatharana is perfect for those seeking peace, natural beauty, and a quick Himalayan escape.
At an altitude of around 2,600 meters, the trek rewards you with 360° views of the majestic Dhauladhars, especially during sunrise and sunset. It’s also an excellent camping destination, with clear skies for stargazing and a true off-the-grid experience.

The Thatharana trek begins from the village of Kharota, just a short drive from Dharamshala. The trail ascends gradually through pine and deodar forests, opening up to vast meadows as you approach the ridge. After 3–4 hours of trekking, you reach the Thatharana campsite, which offers a spectacular view of the Dhauladhar range in one direction and the Kangra plains in the other. Camp overnight under the stars and wake up to a magical Himalayan sunrise. The next morning, enjoy breakfast and begin your descent back to the base village.
Itineraries
Day 01
Dharamshala to Thatharana Campsite (Trek – 6 km / 3–4 hours)
- Depart from Dharamshala in the morning and drive to Kharota village (the trek starting point)
- Begin your trek through thick pine and oak forests with gradual ascents
- En route, enjoy scenic views of the Kangra Valley and fresh mountain air
- Arrive at Thatharana ridge by afternoon — a peaceful meadow offering 360° views of the Dhauladhar range
- Set up camp, relax, and enjoy a mesmerizing sunset over the mountains
- Evening bonfire (subject to forest regulations) and dinner under the stars
- Overnight stay in tents
Day 02
Thatharana to Kharota – Return to Dharamshala
- Wake up early to witness a breathtaking Himalayan sunrise
- Enjoy a hot breakfast with panoramic views
- Begin your descent back through the same forest trail
- Reach Kharota by late morning and drive back to Dharamshala
- Trek ends with unforgettable memories of nature and solitude
